Water Fountains Project: Water for Schools in Rural Areas
KIDS’ HANDWASHING PROJECT: We are hoping to break ground for the first “Children’s Water Fountain” towards the end of 2019, at St. Cecilia, Kituiuni. We pray that God will bless this Project and enkindle a fire of benevolence in the hearts of well wishers so this endeavor might come to fruition!
Our Water Projects since 2008 has been able to assist the community of Kituiuni in small scale farming; schools in the area and a Health Center which KUSARD build in the area but is now fully supported and managed by the Makueni County Division of Health. Our biggest challenges are the prolonged droughts which sometimes cause the water at the catchment point to diminish drastically leading to very little of it reach the end users. Read the Full Story.
But all in all, many benefits have been derived from the Ikuma-Kituiuni Water Project, otherwise known as the Linda Daglian Memorial Water Project, named after a member of the Wayne Presbyterian Church Community in New Jersey who were the initial Sponsors of the Project. It will be with the help of water from this project and roof-catchment on which we will depend for our newest Children’s Hand washing Project.

THE KIDS’ HAND-WASHING FACILITIES:
Avoiding Hand-transmitted illnesses, including diarrhea and pneumonia etc can be done if people wash their hands frequently and especially after visiting public toilets or after handling dirt in any form.
It is a well publicized fact that slowing the spread of bacteria is through good hand hygiene, which includes the use of hand sanitizers, alcohol-based liquids or gels but these are only things possible in developed countries
In developing countries, schools especially those in rural areas have no running water and most kids hardly ever maintain adequately the minimum level of cleanliness necessary to be safe from diseases spread through lack of observation of basic hygienic practice of washing hands after visiting toilets or before taking their meals due to the lack of the washing facilities.
It was against this backdrop that KUSARD was trying to garner support to help us in the improvement of the hygienic conditions of rural area schools by constructing Water Fountains.
Our aim was to start a pilot project of this type at St.Cecilia, Kituiuni then go from there, one school at a time.
Above is a sketch of the type of structure I am referring to as conceived and drafted by the teachers of St. Cecilia, Kituiuni.
The estimated cost of building one of these is about $1,000.
